addadictome: Female to male SRS.

agendered: A person who is internally ungendered.

androgyny: A state where the outward appearance of gender is indistinguishable as either male or female. During transition, transsexuals spend from six months to a year in a state of androgyny while the body adjusts physically to changes induced by HRT.

androgynous: When a person can not be distinguished as any gender by appearance.
anti-transgender: A person, business or organization that discriminates against and/or promotes, justifies or uses violence against transgenders. Anti-transgender actions can be triggered by religious, political or phobic beliefs.

asexual: A person who is NOT sexually attracted to either men or women.

backsliding: When a person in the process of transition has a reversal of progress in transition and reverts back closer, sometimes completely, to the gender role assigned at birth.

Benjamin standards: The Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association’s Standards of Care for Gender Identity Disorders. On it’s 6th edition as of 2004. This is the AMA’s manual of care that doctors and therapists use as a guide to diagnose and treat transgendered people.

bent: Gender variant.
berdache: Originally a Native American term for a gay man who cared for people, it evolved into a term for a third gender person or someone who showed an unfamiliar gender expression.

best of both worlds: Descriptive phrase for sexual relations with a pre-operative transsexual.

bi: abbreviation - bisexual

bigendered: Having gender identity that is a combination of male and female traits.

binding: The practice of strapping down the breasts to keep them hidden from view.

bisexual: Someone who is sexually attracted to members of two sexes.

B.O.B.: acronym - "Battery Operated Boyfriend" A vibrating phallic shaped adult pleasure device.

boi: Biologically female at birth, living in a male gender role.

boob job: "Augmentation mammoplasty" Surgically implanted breast prosthetics.

bottom surgery: Surgery on the genitalia that creates a physical body consistent with preferred gender expression.

boy-up: When a pre-op male to female transsexual who is not living full time temporarily takes on the original gender appearance of the gender assigned at birth for a specific event or occasion and then returns to the transitional gender appearance when the event is over. This may be done to pacify a family member or loved one who has a high level of discomfort or lack of acceptance concerning TG issues.

brain sex: Another term for gender.

breast form(s): Prosthetic breast piece(s).

bulge: When the presence of male genetalia (real or simulated) is visible through the clothing.

CD: acronym - "cross dresser"

chicks with dicks: Term for pre-op male to female transsexuals. Originated by the pornography / adult entertainment industry.

chromosome push: A theory on the origin of gender dysphoria. Contends that the developing embryo is sexually undifferentiated for the first six weeks of gestation. At that time the male Y chromosome pushes the gonads to develop the male gender tract. But in the case of gender dysphoria the push is weak causing a continuation of some female characteristics within the male psyche.

closeted: A person who keeps gender issues secret.

coming out: The process of telling others about one’s gender issues.
constitutional factors: A theory on the origin of gender dysphoria. This theory attributes gender dysphoria to biological factors.

convert-a-cunt: A low-brow term for neo-vagina.

cross dresser: Person who dresses in the clothing of a different gender identity privately to fulfill a personal emotional and/or psychological need.

depression: In transgenders; an emotional condition caused by fear or misunderstanding of gender issues or other situations related to gender issues. Most transgenders experience some level of depression at some time. Depression in transgenders can be life threatening.

D.E.S.: acronym - Diethylstilbestrol. A theory on the origin of gender dysphoria. A powerful synthetic estrogen drug used between 1938 - 1971 to prevent miscarriages. Side effects for the fetus include miss-formed genetalia, and a high incidence of transgender behavior in later life.

dilate: To use a medical device to stretch a surgically created vagina to keep it open and prevent it from collapsing in on itself.

dilator: A phallic-shaped medical device used by a male-to-female transsexual on a regular basis to keep her neo-vagina from collapsing in upon itself.

drab: acronym - "dressed as boy."

drag: 1) acronym - "dressed as girl" 2) Performance art form where a performer wears the clothing of the opposite gender and impersonates said gender.
drag king: A female who dresses in male clothing for the purposes of performance. Drag kings are not transgendered.

drag queen: A male who dresses in female clothing for the purposes of performance. Drag queens are not transgendered.

dressing: When a person wears the clothing consistent to the gender of his/her gender dysphoria.

dyke: A masculine lesbian.

early onset: When GID presents itself in people at pre-adolescent ages. Early onset GID conditions can be diagnosed as early as age 4.

electro: abbreviation - "electrolysis" - The process of using an electrified needle to kill hair follicles on the face and body. Transgenders use this process mostly to remove beards and mustaches.

en femme: When a masculine person portrays an outward appearance of feminine gender.

enhancement: Surgical augmentation of physical characteristics.

eonism: Old world term for transvestism. This phrase was used to honor Chevalier d’Eon, a nobleman in the court of Louis XV of France. He was widely known for dressing as a woman while he carried out diplomatic missions.

escort: Person who makes a living by charging money to spend time in the company of another person. Many escorts engage in prostitution to make enough money to support the expense of transition.

estrogen: The hormone that occurs naturally in humans that causes the development of feminine physical traits. Male to female transsexuals take manufactured prescription estrogen to facilitate the physical development of femininity.

etiology: The science that assigns causes. The etiology of gender dysphoria has numerous theories including biological, environmental and hormonal conditions. None of the theories have been proven conclusively as of 2004.

eunuch: A biological male who has had his testicles surgically removed.

female impersonator: A male who dresses in female clothing for the purposes of performance.

female to male: A person born anatomically female who’s gender expression is male.

femme: Being feminine in appearance and/or mannerism.

femme name: A feminine name adopted by a male to female transgender.

femme self: Strong female component to the personality.

femme queen: Someone who is male bodied but has a female gender expression.

femmophile: A heterosexual male with a strong love of the feminine but may or may not be transgendered.

fetish: aka "sexual fetish" A person who wears particular pieces of clothing of the a gender other than their own for sexual gratification. Fetishes are not transgendered.

FFS: acronym - Feminization facial surgery.
flaming: A person who is consciously or unconsciously blatant or obvious in the appearance of being queer.

forced femme: When a male, biological or otherwise, is forced to wear female attire, usually lingerie, by a sexual partner for the purposes of physical gratification. This is not a form of transgenderism.

free-shot bull’s eye: The fear of being a target for anti-transgender or transphobic violence while being without protection from law enforcement agencies.

full time: When a person lives completely in the gender roll of the psyche.

functional: A pre-op male to female transsexual who retains the physical ability to achieve and maintain an erection.

gaff: Underwear garment designed to keep the penis tucked.

gay: A male, biological or otherwise, who is sexually attracted to other males.

GB: acronym - "genetic boy"
gender: 1) Emotional and psychological dispositions of male or female psyche. 2) Societal determination of acceptable behavior for designated males and females. 3) Emotional sexual identity (as distinct from anatomical sex). 4) The preferred role in society, according to sexual stereotypes. 5) "Brain Sex," according to the size and functioning of the Gender Dimorphic Nucleus in the lateral striata of the amydala, which determines sexual identity and behavior.

gender bender: A person who challenges the traditional gender boundaries in outrageous ways with the goal of surprising or shocking others.

gender binary: The traditional idea that there are only two genders, male and female.

gender characteristics: Primary or secondary sexual characteristics, such as height, weight, shape and facial/body hair.

gender conformity: Adhering to the societal "norm" of a gender role despite internal attraction to a different gender role.
gender continuum: A theory on the origin of gender dysphoria. Shows gender traits on a continuum rather than a dichotomy. Presents gender traits clustering in four domains: positive masculine, negative masculine, positive feminine and negative feminine.

gender cues: Visual traits used to discern the gender or sex of a person. IE: hairstyle, gait, body shape, facial hair etc.

gender diverse: Not conforming to the gender based expectations of society.

gender dysphoria: A condition where the designations of gender are mismatched to physical sexual characteristics in varying degrees resulting in mental, emotional and/or physical distress. A person with gender dysphoria is transgendered.

gender expression: The expression of oneself in external presentation and/or appearance of the gender that is consistent with internal feelings.

gender fuck: A person’s confused or surprised reaction to the appearance of androgyny.

gender identity: The gender an individual identifies as, regardless of the physical sex of reproductive organs they were born with. Popularized from the usage in the American Psychology Association's Diagnostic Standards Manual, Version IV.
gender identity disorder: A discomfort or unease with one's sexual identity and genital anatomy. Considered a precursor to transsexuality.

gender non-conformity: Refusing to adhere to the societal "norm" of a gender role.

gender normative: Conforming to the gender based expectations of society.

gender role: The sociologically dictated rolls of "male" and "female." When transgenders transition, they assume the gender roll of their psyche.

gender rights: A political movement aimed to achieve equal civil rights and protection for transgendered people.

gender stereotypes: Societal and/or personal templates for how specific genders should look, dress, and act.

gender therapist: A mental health professional who is specially trained and experienced to diagnose and treat patients with gender dysphoria.

gender queer: 1) A group of people who reject heteronormativity, the traditional two-gender role system. 2) The feeling of being a little of both genders or no gender at all.

gender straight: Conforming to the gender expectations of society.

gender variant: Anyone who identifies with gender concepts outside of what society
prevalently regards as "the norm."

genetic boy: A non-transgender person born with a anatomical male body.

genetic girl: A non-transgender person born with a anatomical female body.

genetic theory: A theory on the origin of gender dysphoria. Maintains that gender dysphoria is inherited through the genes.

GID: acronym - "Gender Identity Disorder"

girl-up: When a pre-op female to male TS who is not living full time temporarily takes on the original gender appearance that was assigned at birth for a specific event or occasion and then returns to the transitional gender appearance when the event is over. GRS: acronym - "Gender Reassignment Surgery." European term for sex-change surgery.
gurl: Biologically male at birth, living in a female gender role.

GW: acronym - "Genetic Woman" Politically correct version of "GG."

hermaphrodite: A person born with both sets of genitalia visible, or one covering the other.

heteronormativity: The traditional two-gender role system.

heterosexual: A person who is sexually attracted only to people of the opposite sex.

hir: (pronounced here) Spivakian pronoun - Alternate pronoun for gender variant person to replace "she" and "her."

home grown: Physical characteristics of the transitional goal of gender appearance that come about from the use of hormones and are not surgically enhanced.

homosexual: A person who is sexually attracted only to people of the same sex.

hormone induced: Physical attributes in transsexuals, such as breasts in male to females, which are induced by HRT but have not been surgically enhanced.

hormones: Prescription medications such as estrogen and testosterone that cause permanent physiological changes in transsexuals.

hormone replacement therapy: The regiment of taking hormones to cause permanent physiological changes in transsexuals. A required precursor to sex-change surgery.

HRT: acronym - "Hormone Replacement Therapy."

hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus in female to male transsexuals.

identity sphere: The idea that gender identities fit on a sphere that allows room far all gender expressions instead of a linear scale consisting only of male and female.

implants: Surgically inserted breast augmentation prostheses.

intergendered: Having a gender identity that is between genders or a combination of genders.

intersexed: Individuals who were physically born with gender-ambiguous genitalia or internal
organs. The functional ability ranges from those with neither set of genitalia functioning, to others with both sets able to function fully. Intersexed people are usually surgically assigned a gender at birth.

in the closet: Keeping gender dysphoria issues secret.

katoey: Term used to designate trans-variant people as the third sex (male, female, katoey). Originated in Thailand.

keyboard SRS: The act of adopting an internet screen name of a gender other than the current biological gender, but is not transsexual, does not have GID and has no intention of transitioning. See also: TS in a box
labiaplasty: Surgical procedure that creates an artificial labia in male to female transsexuals.

ladyboy: Very young male to female pre-op TS. Term originated in Thailand.

laser: Laser hair removal. The process of using a medical laser to kill hair follicles on the face and body. Transgenders use this process mostly to remove beards and mustaches.

lesbian: A female, biological or otherwise, who is sexually attracted to other females.

LGBTTSQI: acronym - Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, queer and intersexed.
Living for a year: Transsexuals are required to live for a full year in the proper gender role before being eligible for SRS.

macho trap: An activity or situation that a transgender embarks upon for a period of time in an attempt to deny or suppress feelings and/or desires stemming from gender dysphoria.

male impersonator: A female who dresses in male clothing for the purposes of performance.

male lesbian: Male who identifies as lesbian.

male to female: A person born anatomically male who’s gender expression is female.

mastectomy: "Subcutoneous mastectomy" Surgical removal of the breasts for female to male transsexuals.

Mathew 19:12: Bible verse used to support transsexuality. "For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. meatoplasty: Reparative or reconstructive surgery of a meatus or canal. During SRS a meatoplasty is performed to relocate the urethra.

M to F: abbreviation - "male to female"

name change: Acquiring a legal gender-appropriate first name for transsexuals. Most SRS doctors accept the date
of the name change as proof that the TS has lived for a full year in the proper gender role.

neo-vagina: Surgically created vagina constructed and installed in a male-to-female transsexual during sex reassignment surgery.

non-functional: A pre-op male to female transsexual who has lost the physical ability to achieve and maintain an erection as a side effect of HRT. The majority of male to female transsexuals are non-functional.

omni-sexual: A person who is sexually attracted to all sexes.

orchie: abbreviation - "bilateral orchidectomy" - aka castration. The surgical procedure that removes the testicles of male to female transsexuals.

out: When one no longer keeps his/her gender dysphoria condition a secret.

outed: When another person reveals a transgender’s as being a gender other than what is being displayed either purposely or accidentally.

outing: Involuntary disclosure of one’s gender identity.

oophorectomy: Removal of the ovaries in female to male transsexuals.

package: Male genetalia including the penis and testicles.

packer: 1) Penile prosthesis worn by female to male transgenders. 2) A person who engages in the act of stuffing or packing.

packing: Wearing a penile prosthesis.

pangendered: A gender identity that is comprised of many gender expressions.

part time TS: A transsexual who is not living full time in the post-transition gender role. Usually remaining in the gender roll assigned at birth publicly but lives in the gender role consistent with gender dysphoria in private life.

pass: To portray the appearance of a specific gender convincingly.

passable: Having the ability to portray the appearance of a specific gender convincingly.

passing: The act of successfully appearing as a specific gender roll.

paternal theory: A theory on the origin of gender dysphoria. Maintains that gender dysphoria relates to the father’s influence in the person’s life. Asserts that the fathers do not provide an adequate male roll model.

phalloplasty: Female to Male SRS. A series of operations to create a penis and scrotum for a female-to-male transsexual.

politically correct: To attempt to refer to everyone and everything using new terminologies created in an effort to offend nobody and remove anything that is even remotely offensive from publicly accessible writing or conversation. Politically correct terminology within the transgender community has caused the confusion that has made the "North American Dictionary of Transgender Slang" necessary.

post-op: abbreviation - "post operative" A transsexual who has completed sex-change surgery.

prenatal theory: A theory on the origin of gender dysphoria. Also called symbiotic fusion. Theorizes that there is a memory of existing with the mother prior to birth.

pre-op: abbreviation - "preoperative" A transsexual who has not completed sex-change surgery.
See also: non-op, post-op

prevalence: How often something occurs. The prevalence of GID is rare, affecting about 3 of every 100,000 males and 1 of every 100,000 females (Morrison, 1995).

primary sex characteristics: physical sexual characteristics visible at birth used to assign gender.

purge: When a person’s guilt or unease prompts an attempt to dispose of all collected trappings of the gender roll consistent with gender dysphoria. This is an attempt to return completely to the gender roll designated at birth and deny all feelings caused by his/her gender dysphoria. Purging can lead to depression.

queer: Umbrella term used to designate anyone who is not heterosexual.

read: [red] (being read) When a person who is trying to display a specific gender is recognized as a gender other than what is being displayed.

second self: Recognizing the presence of both masculine and feminine traits within the personality.

secondary sex characteristics: The sex characteristics developed during puberty.

sex: 1) Physical anatomy of the genitalia. Male or female reproductive organs. 2) The act of copulation.

sex identity: How a person identifies physically.

sexual orientation: The sex a person is sexually attracted to. Sexual orientation is not a factor in determining transgenderism.

sexual reassignment surgery: Surgical procedure(s) that change physical gender.

she-male: Term made popular by the pornography / adult entertainment industry to specify a pre-op male to female transsexual performer.

sissy: Derogatory term referring to a femme male. This term originated in the American west in the early 19th century as "sister-boy." It began appearing in it’s shortened form at the turn of the 20th century.

sister with a shifter: A pre-operative male to female transsexual.

spiro: abbreviation - "spironolactone" An anti-androgen. Suppresses the production counters the effects of testosterone produced naturally in a male to female’s body.

Spivakian pronouns: New terms proposed as gender neutral personal pronouns in the English language.

squishy: When a non-functional pre-op male to female transsexual becomes sexually aroused.

SRS: acronym - "sex reassignment surgery" American terminology for sex-change surgery.
stealth: 1) Staying in the closet to keep and/or protect jobs, families or for self-preservation. 2) Passing without being noticed. 3) Being unknown as transgendered even to other transgenders.

straight: Someone who is sexually attracted only to members of the opposite sex. People who date or have physically intimate relationships with transsexuals usually refer to themselves as straight.

strap-on: A phallic shaped adult pleasure device attached to a harness. Worn by people without functional male genetalia to accommodate penetration during sexual intercourse.

stuffing: The practice of placing an object in the front of the trousers to simulate a masculine bulge by means other than the use of a packer.

suppressed femininity: Suppressing/denying feminine feelings and inclinations.

suppressed masculinity: Suppressing/denying masculine feelings and inclinations.

surf & turf: A pre-operative transsexual.

switch hitter: 1) A person who changes his/her gender appearance back and forth between male, female and/or androgyny on a regular basis. 2) Bisexual.
symbiotic fusion: A theory on the origin of gender dysphoria. Also called "prenatal theory." Theorizes that there is a memory of existing with the mother prior to birth.

testosterone: The hormone that occurs naturally in humans that causes the development of masculine physical traits. Female to male transsexuals take manufactured prescription testosterone to facilitate the physical development of masculinity.

TG: acronym - "transgender"

TG friendly: A person, business, or organization that is friendly or supportive of transgenders and/or transgender issues.

t-gurl: Male to female transgender.

therapist letter: Paper work from a licensed therapist or psychiatrist that confirms the clinical diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Therapist letters are required before sex-change surgery can be performed.

third sex: Term used in certain cultures that accept that a third gender of variant people exists.

T-male: Pre-op female to male transsexual.

top surgery: Surgical creation of a male type chest.

tranny: abbreviation - "transgender"

tranny chaser: A person who seeks transsexuals as sexual companions over genetically male or female partners.

trans: abbreviation - A gender variant person.

trans-activism: Political activity goaled to achieving gender rights.

trans-activist: A person who is politically active with the goal of achieving gender rights in his/her specific political arena.

transandrogyny: A gender expression that does not have a prominent male or female characteristics.

trans-culture: The specific microcosm comprised of the portion of society that encompasses transgenders, their families, friends, loved ones and allies.

transfeminine: Variant gender expression that is prominently feminine.

trans-feminism: A combination of the gender rights movement and Feminism.

transgender: Umbrella term that covers all levels and forms of gender dysphoria and gender identity disorder including, but not limited to cross dressers, transvestites, and transsexuals. It does not include drag queens and sexual fetishes.

transgendered community: The microcosm of society that is composed of people of all stages of transgenderism and gender dysphoria.
transgenderist: A person who identifies as transgendered but does not identify as a more specific classification.

transhate: An irrational hatred of those who are transgendered. Often expressed violently and/or deadly.

trans-inclusive: Including transgenders, being sensitive to transgender issues and gender rights.

transition: The period of adjustment and physical change between one's gender assigned at birth and one's gender consistent with gender dysphoria. Persons in transition take hormones, wear the clothes of and learn to live as a member of their new gender.

transman: (transmen) Term used for post-op female to male transsexuals. Popularized by the politically correct movement.

transmasculine: Variant gender expression that is prominently masculine.

transphobia: An irrational, inexplicable fear of trans-variant people.

transsexual: A person who makes permanent changes to his/her body to achieve a complete physical transformation from one gender to another.

transsexualism: A condition in which a person experiences a discontinuity between their assigned sex and what they feel their core gender is.

transsexuality: When the gender-related structures of the brain that define gender identity are exactly opposite the physical sex organs of the body.

trans-variant: A person who does not identify as any of the traditional gender roles.

transwoman: (transwomen) Term used for post-op male to female transsexuals. Popularized by the politically correct movement.

TS: acronym - "transsexual"

TS in a box: A person who refers to him/herself as a transsexual but has not taken any steps towards transition.

tuck: The practice of hiding the penis by securing it between the legs for the purpose of hiding a masculine bulge while wearing feminine clothing.

TV: acronym - "transvestite"

two-spirit: English translation for many words in a variety of Native American tribal languages that refer to males and females who assume and live in gender roles different to those traditional to their anatomical birth sex. Many tribes have detailed ceremonies to celebrate a two-spirit person assuming the gender role of choice.

urinary packer: A penile prosthesis that allows a female to male transgender to urinate in a masculine fashion while standing.

use it or lose it: Phrase that reminds post-op male to female transsexuals that a neo-vagina will collapse in upon itself without regular use and/or dilation.

vaginoplasty: Clinical term for the portion of sex-change surgery that creates a vaginal cavity.

wenis: When the clitoris becomes engorged and protrudes slightly when sexually aroused.

wintke: Native American term for gender variant people.

ze: (pronounced zee) Spivakian pronoun - Alternate pronoun for gender variant person to replace "he" and "him."

24/7: When a transgender lives completely in the gender roll consistent with gender dysphoria.

50% rule: Statistic that states, "50% of all transsexuals will die by their early thirties. A small number die from violence, disease or other common causes. Most commit suicide."
